,,, that is the motto of the 38th National Cowboy Gathering and it's well chosen: young and old artists performing on different smaller stages, in different "panels", and, on two main stages in evening shows. There is something going on all day at two main locations - the Western Folklife Center and the Convention/Conference Center - from 9 am till late. Yesterday we spent 11 hours in the Convention/Conference Center to listen to superb poets and musicians, young and old, of different ethnicities, male and female.
Below photos from the Keynote Address (official opening of the event) on Thursday morning with Indian Drums (Painted Horse) and a remarkable speech of U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo (Muscogee tribe). Henry Realbird (Apsaasalooke/Crow), a true character and remarkable poet, was taking part as well (photo far below).
What an effort they put in to arrange that great festival in Elko, it's arranged by a non-profit organisation - the Western Folklife center -, and, it's mostly volunteers helping out!
Still ice-cold outside, -17 deg C (6 F) yesterday, but bright and sunny. Fortunately, we are spending most of the time inside anyway. Following are a couple of photos of performers (who are all very down-to-earth, intermingling with the public), taken during day-time panels (several artists performing alternatingly in one room) and during the evening show. Also, there is a "Mercantile" - an arts market (photo above), there is local food vendors and beer and whiskey and a souvenir/book store.
