Tuesday morning: rain. Fortunately, we had a tour in the new MoMA first thing this morning. The museum got a new expansion and reopened in October with expanded galleries and spaces for performance, conversation, and art making.
The real value of this expansion is not more space, but how the new space is used, much more creative now, sorted mostly for subjects and not purely chronologically, all different media in one room: film, photo, paintings, sculptures, furniture of the time, etc. Founded in 1929, the museum moved a couple of times, and since it is in Manhattan (1939) a couple of famous architects were involved: Philip Johnson, César Pelli, Yoshio Taniguchi and, now, Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Gensler. We spent a couple of hours there.
Afterwards, we spent some time at Strand's, our favorite bookstore in NYC, but, unfortunately it was too cold to spend much time outside at the cheap bookshelves.
Pic shows one of the subway stations (14th St.) with funny little bronze sculptures of Tom Otterness everywhere:
Ended up in the evening at 120th Street in Harlem for dinner in a great little new restaurant by name "Archer & Goat", a fantastic addition to the otherwise a bit dull culinary scene in this neighborhood. Besides their terrific beer menu with local microbrews and cocktails (pic), they served very tasty veggie dishes, like brussel sprouts and cauliflower. Small place, great bar and vibe.
