Thursday - another interesting day with our friend Dom in Brooklyn. We went on tour with him through Industry City, a new development on the waterfront, a former industrial section of Sunset Park, in the Southern part of Brooklyn. It consists of a conglomeration of renovated buildings and some decayed ones in the surroundings. The old piers, where formerly lots of merchandise was shipped out and, also, large ocean liners anchored, is just a decrepit relict of the busy times here until the 1950ies.
Not far away from the row of revived storehouses is Bush Terminal Piers Park, which offers spectacular views, but is surrounded by mostly industrial facilities. The park is named for Bush (see pic on the left), who established first an oil refinery, sold it to Standard Oil, but later the complex fell back into the hands of his son who started a manufacturing operation.
In the buildings is workspace and retail space, open to the public and behind doors. The buildings are connected by Innovation Alley, with some kiosks, playgrounds and park-like areas. Really nicely done! Inside there are the studios of makers and creators of all kind, part of them have shops adjacent to the studios and workshops, like a sake brewery, a honey-maker, a candle-maker, a chocolate-maker. There are different designer and furniture stores and a Food Hall, a store/eatery of Sahadi's, the traditional oriental supermarket, a Japanese food court with a supermarket, a BBQ place (where we had a great lunch) and other restaurants. There are fantastic gathering places, too, inside, open to the public, with couches, bookshelves and desks where you can work on your laptop with free WiFi.
We explored the surroundings, too, before we headed out to Atlantic Ave/Barclays Center for some shopping at Uniqlo and then on to Bushwick, where we burned some time in KCBC - a collaboration of different brewers - before we met our friends M&M in Brooklyn Cider House for a great cider tasting and "cider catching" (from the large barrel) in a casual, pleasant atmosphere.
Thank you Dom, for another great "Brooklyn Day". Your Made in Brooklyn tours are all terrific!
