Makoshika - "bad lands" - and agathes

Departing Miles City for Terry, a small town half-way to Glendive. Stopped at the "inofficial visitor center" to meet with Dale & Kathy, owners of a unique and beautiful "Made in Montana" store.

We spent an interesting morning with Dale (left photo), who was driving us up to a fantastic viewpoint in the Terry Badlands. Landscape was just breath-taking there!

We visited the local museum & gallery (photo far below) as well as the historic Kempton Hotel, built in 1902 and the oldest continuously operated hotel in Montana. Even during COVID it didn't shut down! With the owner of the hotel and Dale we had burgers for lunch, along with interesting conversation over all and sundry before we left this little town in the early afternoon.

Heading out for Makoshika State Park next, another fantastic Badlands landscape. With a park ranger we explored the visitor center (dinosauriers!) and the park, which could probably even compete with some National Parks!

Out on the river next: A boat tour on Yellowstone River with Justin of Yellowstone River Adventures (photos below). Water was very flat, real warm, and, it was hot in general: 90 deg. F. (30 C)! Main reason for the boat tour was to hunt agathes. Changed our opinion about Oregon agathes: other than the small little pieces there, we found big stones here along the river bank! There are reddish ones as well, and, after the tour, we had a full bag of stones in the car. Certainly, can't carry them all home!

Stayed in a beautiful historic house, formerly a B&B, now an AirBnB, where we were the only guests.

Glendive ,,, a pretty active town - our impression after we met with the mayor and a tourism rep in the morning for breakfast. Railroad tracks on one side, historic buildings on the other, plus, a well-sorted and nicely arranged museum, the Frontier Gateway Museum (photos below).
